Game Review:Resident Evil 2(PSX)

Post  Administrator on Fri 02 Apr 2010, 3:39 pm

My next review is Resident Evil 2..

Now on with the review..

Story:
You are up against the undead, except this time in a big city and you are surrounded by zombies..

Overall the story gets a 7/10.
Not very high, but it's better than being couped up in a mansion..

Graphics:
The graphics seemed to probably be revolutionary for it's time, but nowadays the graphics seem somewhat primitive, but the graphics do alright..

Overall the graphics get a 7/10

Gameplay:
It's the basic formula of "SHOOT ZOMBIE,GET ITEM,SOLVE PUZZLE,GO TO NEXT AREA".
But the gameplay isn't exactly repetitive and boring, there are some scares in the game(if you want to really be scared, go play Silent Hill)
Only problem is the backtracking, the game is a bit hard(espically if the only RE game you've played is Resident evil 4..), but once you get the controls down, things go well..

However one cool feature of this game is, for example..
If you beat Leon's story, you can go through as Claire(a different character..)
e.g.-

Beat Leon's Story(LeonA) then you can play as Claire(ClaireB)
Beat Claire's Story(ClaireA) then you can play as Leon in this part(LeonB)
And if you are playing as Claire, you don't need to use keys(Her brother,Chris is a lockpick master, I guess you could say..), while Leon has to find keys in order to open some doors..

And if you are playing as Leon, for example
There is a part where you need two red jewels, in one area there is a fireplace and Leon can simply use his lighter to bring the red jewel down, while Claire has to do something different..

and if you have the Dualshock version, you will have some extra features..

Overall the gameplay gets a 8/10
Despite the backtracking, the game does wel..

Sound and Music:
The voices are still a little crappy, but they do okay I guess...
The music does excellent, though..
From epic(Theme that plays when you face off Tyrant-B) to scary(Music that plays on the second floor of the R.P.D. Police Station) to even more epic(one of themes that plays when you face off against one of William Birkin's forms) to supenseful(First floor of the R.P.D. Police Station)

The voice acting gets a 7/10,
It's okay, but not perfect
Music gets a 8/10

Rent or Buy?
If you can deal with the backtracking and the different points of view, the game is pretty good..

Overall:
I give Resident Evil 2 a 8/10.
Despite a couple of problems the game does well..
and there is a couple of differences between the versions:

Regular:
Nothing, just the two discs for the game, that's it..

DualShock Version:
DualShock-enabled,
Extreme Battle,
Ranking system for Minigames,
Easy Mode

Sega Dreamcast Version:
Windows additions,
"VMU" monitor,
Demo of Resident Evil:Code: Veronica

Nintendo 64 version:
"EX-files",
Item randomiser,
violence controller,
FP controls,
Different costumes,
no Extreme Battle mode,
Hunter cameo,
surround sound

Nintendo Gamecube version:
Stuff from the DualShock version,
skippable cutscenes,
higher quality scenes

Ah yes, I remember this game..

I find RE4 better, because of the enemies having better AI and no "sluggish tank' controls and not much of any backtracking.
But this game does just fine..
Could you do a review for Ape Escape?I love that game!
